Providing Holistic Care to Vulnerable Moms
Ethiopia Connection
The Challenge:
Ethiopia has a population of over 85 million people. As a country, Ethiopia ranks among the world’s worst in infant and maternal health. 94% of births in Ethiopia are not attended by a doctor, nurse or midwife.
Infant Mortality Rate (CIA World Factbook, 2011):
- For every 1,000 children born in Ethiopia, 77 will die between birth and age one
- For every 1,000 children born in the US, only 6 will die between birth and age one
Maternal Mortality Rate (World Health Organization, 2008):
- For every 100,000 live births, there are 470 maternal deaths in Ethiopia
- For every 100,000 live births, there are only 24 maternal deaths in the US
Doma has connected with the Bora community, a beautiful mountain village located in Southern Ethiopia, about a 12-hour drive from the capital city, Addis Ababa. Five rural communities surround Bora. In places like Bora, it would be rare for any births to be attended by a doctor or midwife.
Bora is 6 miles from Chencha.
The doma Solutions:
SERVING through Short-term Medical Service Teams-
Doma sends medical teams to Ethiopia twice per year to host medical clinics in Bora and other locations around Ethiopia. These teams provide medical care to hundreds of people during these trips mainly treating infections, wounds, pains, and malnutrition.
BRINGING HOPE through the Hidota Health Center-
Doma is building the HIDOTA HEALTH CENTER, a Prenatal and Early Childhood Health Center in Bora. “Hidota” means hope in the local language of Gamogna. The Hidota Health Center will focus on bringing hope through maternal and child health and wellness. It will provide pregnancy, delivery, and post-delivery care to mothers, as well as well-child care, immunizations, and sick care to infants and children. Education will include nutrition, infant/child development and care, and basic hygiene.
YOUR CONNECTION:
DONATE: Hidota Health Center – We need $2250 per month to operate Hidota – this includes medical staff, medications, emergency care, and supplies. We need your partnership to meet the needs of the people of Bora.
VOLUNTEER: Medical and non-medical people are needed for these trips. We set-up primary care clinics in Bora and other locations in Ethiopia. We provide medical care and health education to the people of the local communities. The country is breathtakingly beautiful; the people are full of warmth and hospitality. This is a trip of a lifetime – you definitely don’t want to miss it!
